STAR Method

The STAR method is a structured approach for answering behavioral interview questions.

The STAR method is an interview technique that encourages you to structure your response in a coherent, concise manner, focusing on specific instances from your work experience. Here's what STAR stands for:


Situation: Describe the context or setting of the situation you were in. This grounds your response and gives the interviewer a canvas to envisage the scene.

Task: Here, you talk about the specific task or jobs you were assigned to, or the challenge you encountered in the situation you described. This communicates your responsibilities or roles.


Action: This step showcases the specific steps and strategies you took to address or complete the task. It's your chance to demonstrate your problem-solving skills and your ability to successfully handle tasks or challenges.


Result: Finally, explain the outcome of your actions. The result could be the successful completion of a project, averted crisis, professional growth, learned lessons, etc. When possible, use quantifiable results to give the interviewer a sense of the magnitude or impact of your actions.


While using the STAR method, ensure your responses relate directly to the job you're interviewing for, ensure they're focused and concise, and put emphasis on your role and contributions.
