**About GovLab.ai**
We transform the way you think about applied AI. Our teams are structured around projects for the public sector, guided by a Project Delivery Manager, Product Owner, and Senior Machine Learning Developers. This provides working models to support informed strategic decision-making around key AI technologies in the public sector. This is a 4-month paid contract starting May 2025, with potential for extension to 8 or 12 months; please indicate in your application if these options are of interest to you.

**Job Role**
As an Associate Machine Learning Developer, you will work on public sector ML projects, delivering solutions to our Public Sector Partners including Service Alberta and other government departments. Our mission is to set a global example of transforming the public sector through applied AI, encouraging the growth of high-demand machine learning and AI skills.

During the 4-month period, you will be part of a team focused on specific use cases identified by our Public Sector Partners. You will gain experience in various AI/ML and data processing fields, utilizing resources and mentorship to aid in your career development. Teams will be led by the Project Delivery Manager, who will employ AltaML methodology to create working models and guide teams on implementing solutions.

**Eligibility Requirements**
This opportunity is funded in partnership with Mitacs, requiring candidates to meet all eligibility criteria. Candidates must be currently enrolled at the University of Alberta, University of Calgary (Masters Only), Mount Royal University, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, or Queen's University. This role is based in Canada and may require occasional work from our offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Waterloo.

**What You'll Do**
- Participate in team planning sessions and educational presentations
- Review data to understand its overall scope and structure
- Identify metrics to measure the success of models and projects
- Pre-process data for analysis and model development
- Uncover trends, insights, and key features for ML solutions
- Develop models based on available data and identified problems
- Create proof of concept working models for viable use cases
- Suggest novel solutions and recommendations for integrating models into business
- Communicate and present team work to AltaML and Public Sector Partners
- Gain familiarity with various data processing tools and AI/ML algorithms
- Research and connect with your cohort to enhance domain knowledge

**What You Bring**
**Minimum Requirements:**
- Enrolled in a post-secondary degree program at eligible institutions for the duration of the internship
- General knowledge and experience in Python and data science libraries/packages (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib)
- Understanding of machine learning and software development concepts
- Ability to work 40 hours per week during the internship

**Nice to Have:**
- Exposure to version control/Git
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Well-developed communication skills, capable of engaging in client meetings and delivering professional presentations
