**POSITION SUMMARY**
Reporting to the Director of Credit, the National Underwriter evaluates residential mortgage applications following the Bank’s credit policies and guidelines. The National Underwriter makes decisions to approve or decline mortgage loan applications and collaborates with various internal (sales, loan documentation, and funding teams) and external (appraisers) partners throughout the evaluation, fulfillment, and funding processes. This role ensures mortgage loans are safe and sound and that HomeEquity Bank’s high standards are adhered to.
**MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE**
- Evaluate mortgage applications, verify supporting documentation, and ensure accuracy of information in the Bank’s loan system.
- Provide decisions on applications or refer applications to management for approval.
- Document clear and complete decision notes and conditions of approved applications.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
- Interact with internal business partners for collection and follow-up of all required documents.
- Review and verify accuracy of all required documents in compliance with internal policies.
- Adhere to service level agreements and escalate suspicious transactions as necessary.
**SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED**
- University Degree or Community College Diploma
- Minimum 3+ years of underwriting experience from personal lending at a Canadian financial institution
- Ideally, 3+ years of residential mortgage underwriting experience
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written communication skills (bilingual in French and English for applicable roles)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Well-organized with effective time management skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
