**Position**
System Design Specialist

**Job Description**
We are looking for a System Design Specialist to join our team in Toronto. The successful candidate will analyze and evaluate designs to verify compliance with system technical requirements, develop Subsystem requirements, create block designs, interlocking control tables, and application databases for Software subsystems, and assess system performance while preparing associated technical contract deliverables. You will be accountable for executing design work accurately within cost and schedule limits as defined in approved work packages.

**Key Responsibilities:**
- Convert customer requirements into conceptual designs and prepare associated documentation through operational analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies.
- Create new concepts or modify existing designs to meet customer needs.
- Define application databases for software subsystems and conduct necessary analyses to ensure design feasibility.
- Prepare specialized signaling design skills, covering areas such as signaling principles, block design, interlocking control tables, safe braking models, performance analysis, and application database design.
- Support bids and proposals, including compliance assessments and gap analysis.
- Present technical designs and reports to customers and other engineering/management groups clearly and concisely.
- Propose updates to processes and standards based on systems engineering knowledge and technical specialty.
- Evaluate operational design limits and perform performance analyses and simulations to support the above.
- Ensure the signaling design complies with applicable standards and principles.
- Collaborate effectively with Software, Hardware, and IVVQ groups to resolve in-house and field test issues.
- Supervise contractors and other systems specialists, providing direction and mentorship.
- Prepare and deliver regular status reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify and implement process improvement initiatives while promoting a safety culture.
- Ensure safety is integrated into the design by early identification and resolution of safety-related defects.

**Required Skills and Experience:**
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in developing software-based system applications.
- Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.

**Preferred Skills and Experience:**
- Strong knowledge of Automated Train Control systems and systems engineering principles.
- Familiarity with modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools.
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills.
- Strong planning and organizational abilities.
- Experience with DOORS, Melody advance, etc.
- Knowledge of rail signaling.
